CHELSEA TELFORD
ARC2001 - BELOW THE VINES (MAKING EMPTINESS)
LEVANTINE HILL GALLERY PROPOSAL
The site of Levantine Hilly winery is located in Coldstream of the Yarra Valley wine region which is an hour out from the CBD and a big tourist destination. the winery opened in 2009 and includes a restaurant and cellar door which is pictured below, as well as winemaking facilities and homestead. when analyzing site key interests involved the nature of the vines as well as potential with the large lot of unused land pictured below. this area is directly off the main road is completely unused on site. the proposal should ensure that the view off the main road still highlights the main winery facility and the intervention/ gallery should be partly underground to retain the open landscape.
BELOW THE VINES
This project aims to challenge ideas of the ground plan and negative connotations connected to the cellar through projecting life back into the underground. The spaces look up into the sky through skylights, to disorientate the inhabitant in relation to ground level. This also creates a dynamic intense atmosphere within the envelope of space below the ground plane. The interior breaks through the surface of the ground, creating an interactive landscape above, where people occupy on-top of the main gallery spaces below. This notifies people there is activity below ground as well as forming a new cultural garden condition above ground. The project relies on casting as a method of design through explorations of spatial textural, light and material qualities
